Antibiotic-resistant infections ‘set to rise after Covid pandemic’ amid warning of ‘hidden pandemic’

Image
Covid measures played a part in bringing down antibiotic resistance last year but opening up could cause renewed surge in infections. Resistance to antibiotics is likely to rise after the pandemic and could push the UK into “another crisis”, according to health experts. The spread of antibiotic resistance is a world-wide problem and is expected to cause millions of deaths this decade. A joint report published in 2019 by the United Nations and the World Health Organisation said that drug-resistant diseases could cause 10 million deaths each year by 2050 and force up to 24 million people into extreme poverty by 2030 if no action is taken. New data from the UK Health Security Agency shows one in five people with a bloodstream infection had one that was resistant to antibiotics. Resistance can cause serious complications as infections become extremely hard to treat and leads in some cases to hospital admissions and death. Due to increased social distancing and personal hygiene, government

The truth about nitrates and nitrites

Image
Any of us know that we should steer away from processed meats and eat more vegetables if we want to be healthier and lower our chances of developing certain types of cancers.  While there are many reasons processed meats aren’t great for our health, one reason is because they contain chemicals called nitrates and nitrites. But processed meats aren’t the only foods that contain these chemicals. In fact, many vegetables also contain high amounts – mainly nitrates. And  https://silcontrolpills.tumblr.com/post/668077323121295360/%E0%B8%A3-%E0%B8%A7-%E0%B8%A7-silcontrol yet research suggests that eating vegetables lowers – not raises – cancer risk. So how can nitrates and nitrites be harmful when added to meat but healthy in vegetables? The answer lies in how nitrates and nitrites get converted into other molecules. Nitrates and nitrites are attached to sodium or potassium, and belong to a family of chemically related molecules that also includes the gas nitric oxide.  https://silcontrolre

Regularly drinking tea and coffee linked to lower risk of stroke and dementia

Alzheimer’s Research UK cautions study is not able to ‘pinpoint cause and effect’ Drinking multiple cups of tea and coffee a day has been associated with a lower risk of stroke and dementia, according to a new study. Research published in the  https://pipperemro.peatix.com/view PLOS Medicine journal said those who drank two to three cups of coffee, or three to five cups of tea – or a combination of four to six cups of both – could possibly have a lower risk of developing a condition. Drinking two to three cups of coffee with two to three cups of tea was associated with a 32 per cent lower risk of stroke and a 28 per cent lower risk of dementia, according to the study. Consumption of coffee alone or in  https://form.jotform.com/213202598109049 combination with tea was also associated with lower risk of post-stroke dementia, it said. China locks down school full of children after single Covid case

Image
Anxious parents received information about their children only after midnight China’s government officials locked down a primary school in Beijing with dozens of students inside, after a teacher tested positive for Covid-19. Anxious parents of the children, reportedly between the ages of seven and twelve, gathered outside late Monday, when the positive case was discovered and the school went into lockdown. The parents received information about their children only a little after midnight, when the principal emerged to inform them that some of the children would have to be quarantined, reported Bloomberg. It is unclear exactly how many students were subsequently quarantined. The BBC, quoting a report by the New Tang Dynasty Television outlet, said 35 children were quarantined. The principal also said the quarantine period for the children would be for two weeks, adding that only one parent could stay with each child for the quarantine period. Man falls 100 feet to his death on zipline after sacrificing himself to save woman, friend says

‘We are saddened and heartbroken over the recent tragic accident involving one of our employees,’ zipline operator says A California zipline employee fell 100 feet to his death after sacrificing himself to save a stranded woman stuck on the zipline as he worried they might both fall under their combined weight. The incident took place on Saturday at the La Jolla Zip Zoom Zipline on the La Jolla Indian Reservation in the Pauma Valley in southern California, between Los Angeles and San Diego. Joaquin Romero was helping a woman on the platform get hooked into the gear when she slid onto the line. Italy records sharp increase in Covid patients in intensive care

Image
Italy's latest health data showed that the trend of falling intensive care admissions had reversed in the past week, while the number of new infections continues to rise. The number of Covid-19 patients in Italian intensive care units increased by 12.9 percent in the period from October 27-November 2, the independent Gimbe foundation for evidence-based medicine said in its weekly report on Thursday. The number of patients in intensive care units had been steadily dropping since the end of August. Italy also recorded another rise in the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases (+16.6 percent) and an increase in the number of patients with coronavirus being admitted to hospital (+14.9 percent), data from the health ministry showed. The number of Covid-related deaths in the last week was relatively stable at 257, compared to 249 the previous week. The report stressed that pressure on health services remained relatively low, with the proportion of ordinary hospital wards and intensive care b

France| Eiffel Tower visitor numbers climb to pre-Covid levels

One big factor was the return of American tourists, who accounted for 10 percent of overall visits, as well as tourists from nearby European countries. The Eiffel Tower is clocking up visitor numbers not seen since Covid-19 kept most tourists away and ripped a deep hole in its finances, the attraction's operator said Thursday. A major paint job on the "Iron Lady" has resumed after an interruption during the pandemic due to high lead levels, it said, with the aim of having the landmark look its best in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Eiffel Tower had "a good month of October", operator Sete told AFP, thanks to tourists returning to Paris, a top  destination. It received an average of more than 20,000 visitors per day in October, up from 13,000 during the summer when curbs kept down numbers allowed into the tower's lifts. October weekend numbers were better than in 2019, Sete said. One big factor was the return of American tourists, who accounted for 1
